Freshmeat - Your Local Roller Derby Team Needs You!

Thursday 19th January 2012 - 8pm-10pm

IT'S FINALLY HERE, THE MOMENT YOU'VE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR, THE ONE THE ONLY..... FRESHMEAT INTAKE!

Starting in Jan, Plymouth City Roller Girls will be opening their doors to a new intake of skaters.

These doors will be open for 4 weeks and then shut again so the trainin...g programme can start. If you are interested in becoming part of PCRG you must make it to at least 1 session during these 4 weeks in order to be allowed to start the training programme which will start on the 16th Feb (we highly recommend coming to all 4)

Roller derby is a team sport which is highly physical and addictive, it doesn’t matter what size or shape you are, there is a role for every type of person in derby, as long as you have the right attitude and the determination to learn and push yourself you will love it!

THINGS YOU WILL NEED

SKATES - roller derby is only allowed to be played in quad skates unless you are a referee, inlines are fine for the 1st few sessions but you will need to upgrade when the training programme begins. Volts or anarchy skates are around £50 - £90 these are ok starter skates. Most of our skaters wear either riedell or suregrip skates. These cost a bit more but they are the ideal starting skate which can be customized to suit a lot easier so you don’t have to buy a completely new set when you want to upgrade.

PADS - KNEE, ELBOW, WRIST - you can get a cheap set of no fear starter pads from sports soccer in town (there are also cheap helmets), this will do while you decide whether derby is for you or not but you will need to upgrade quite quickly.
The most popular brands amongst our skaters are triple 8s, bullets, pro-tec, smith scabs, 187s and TSGs. The 1st 3 in this list are good pads which you can get for a good price so you may want to start with them outright.

HELMETS – any skate helmet is fine, cycle helmets will do to start but again will need to be changed when the programme begins.
WATER – you are doing exercise and anyone that does not bring a drink will not be allowed to skate.

COMFORTABLE CLOTHING – again you are doing exercise so please don’t wear jeans!

A KICK ASSDERBY ATTITUDE!

A small amount of gear inc skates will be available to borrow from us for the first 4 weeks, if you do need to borrow anything please ask on here and we will see what we can do.
Sessions are £5 this includes the £1.50 entry fee that the kitto centre charges all non-members.

Even though the doors are open to everyone to come and have a go, a basic level of skating will be required to start the programme so please get yourself out as much as possible, the Argyll car park and the Hoe are 2 great places to practice. We’re not asking for much but we need to know you are committed to this as much as we are.

SKATE YOUR SKILLS SUNDAYS!

One of our girls organise a fortnightly Sunday skate at the YMCA in Torpoint, Antony Road Torpoint, Cornwall PL11 2NH for us, which you are welcome to attend to improve your skills and meet some of the girls, before freshmeat begins. The dates for Jan will be posted as soon and we have them. Sessions are £3.

A cross-county bash fest

On November 10th the usual Thursday training session was put to one side for a friendly private scrimmage between our local PCRGers and the whirlwinds in pink from Cornwall.
All the skating moves the team had been perfecting at recent practices came together with Plymouth catching goats, building walls that could rival Hadrian and bashing their way around the track. The Cornish brought some Celtic passion to the closed bout and gave as good as they got with points pretty close for most of the jams.
As designated point scorer I found it pretty hard not to get over excited when a PCRGer whizzed past to tot up some points and I will secretly admit that a few squeaks of support may have escaped my lips at numerous times throughout the evening.
Sitting on the sidelines it was great to see how quickly these past few weeks of Derby 101 have started to play out on the track and everyone seemed to be having a fantastic time on their skates.
Here are a few photos snapped from one of our resident paparazzi (my Mr Alex). There are loads more to come so keep an eye out.
Good job PCRG!

PCRG hit the airwaves

This morning Kat and Drea arrived at the studios of Radio Plymouth to give an interview to presenter Tim Mann about all things PCRG and to plug the bout.
After a cuppa and a chat the pair were micced up and primed. Throughout the interview they were asked about our league, the history of the sport, the bout and of course Drea's poorly ankle which is still sporting PCRG colours.
Oozing professionalism and charm (!) they did a cracking job and their enthusiasm for the sport really came across on the airwaves.
Fingers crossed the people of Plymouth have been persuaded to put their hands in their pockets, part with their pennies and come along to the bout on October 1.
I've attached a piccie of Drea and Kat with Tim and another of the pair of them in action on air. There should also be a recording of the interview winging its way to my inbox soon so I will upload that for those who missed it first time round. (five minute planks for those who did miss it though, naughty naughty).
Until next time,

Sneaky Peak!

I thought I would treat you all to a little sneaky peak at how the website is coming along, it is most definitely a work in progress but me and Kathleen Hamma have been hanging out and trying to get it sorted and I think its starting to come together! I am aware of the 'sponsors' typo... that will be changed shortly, what can I say I'm an artist not a dictionary!

Anyway this is also a call for anyone who might want to help, this is your website so the more of you who get involved the more likely it is you will get the website you want. We definitely need someone to help with the 'blurb' for the website, if you are good with words then gimme a shout. I'm also more than happy for people to contribute ideas to the design/layout/content of the website. Any of you are welcome to come hang out with me whilst I work and throw ideas at me. Although be warned, when I am in the apple mac/adobe zone I drink a lot of coffee and smoke a lot of cigarettes!

Thankyou Please

Laura

PLYMOUTH CITY ROLLER GIRLS vs ATLANTIC BREAKERS
@THE MAYFLOWER CENTRE, PLYMOUTH
01.10.11

What better way to start our brand new NEWS BLOG than with the announcement of our first ever bout!

We have just confirmed our 1st bout for our 1st birthday on the 1st of October!
We will be taking on Atlantic Breakers from Cornwall Roller Derby
AND THEY BETTER BE READY!

At the weekend PCRG skaters were put through their paces for their minimum skills test, brutally administered by Boba Fetish, BB Bombshell, Kid Block and Queen LaQueefa (our favourite name ever!) from Tiger Bay Brawlers, and Abnorman from Kernow Rollers. Everybody worked really hard, so we would like to say well done to all the skaters and a big thanks to everyone that came far from foreign lands to help!

Now the minimum skills tests are over, we can concentrate on practising our tactics ready to kick some derby ass! We are also working in overdrive to put on a awesome first bout to celebrate a whole year of hard work and finally giving Plymouth something to cheer for!

The epic battle between these two tractor loving counties will be played out on the track by Devon and Cornwall's brand new teams. Not only will you be able to watch this spectacle unfold you can also party with the teams after at our 1st Birthday Bout Party in the evening so SAVE THE DATE!
