Freshmeat - Your Local Roller Derby Team Needs You!

Thursday 19th January 2012 - 8pm-10pm

IT'S FINALLY HERE, THE MOMENT YOU'VE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR, THE ONE THE ONLY..... FRESHMEAT INTAKE!

Starting in Jan, Plymouth City Roller Girls will be opening their doors to a new intake of skaters.

These doors will be open for 4 weeks and then shut again so the trainin...g programme can start. If you are interested in becoming part of PCRG you must make it to at least 1 session during these 4 weeks in order to be allowed to start the training programme which will start on the 16th Feb (we highly recommend coming to all 4)

Roller derby is a team sport which is highly physical and addictive, it doesn’t matter what size or shape you are, there is a role for every type of person in derby, as long as you have the right attitude and the determination to learn and push yourself you will love it!

THINGS YOU WILL NEED

SKATES - roller derby is only allowed to be played in quad skates unless you are a referee, inlines are fine for the 1st few sessions but you will need to upgrade when the training programme begins. Volts or anarchy skates are around £50 - £90 these are ok starter skates. Most of our skaters wear either riedell or suregrip skates. These cost a bit more but they are the ideal starting skate which can be customized to suit a lot easier so you don’t have to buy a completely new set when you want to upgrade.

PADS - KNEE, ELBOW, WRIST - you can get a cheap set of no fear starter pads from sports soccer in town (there are also cheap helmets), this will do while you decide whether derby is for you or not but you will need to upgrade quite quickly.
The most popular brands amongst our skaters are triple 8s, bullets, pro-tec, smith scabs, 187s and TSGs. The 1st 3 in this list are good pads which you can get for a good price so you may want to start with them outright.

HELMETS – any skate helmet is fine, cycle helmets will do to start but again will need to be changed when the programme begins.
WATER – you are doing exercise and anyone that does not bring a drink will not be allowed to skate.

COMFORTABLE CLOTHING – again you are doing exercise so please don’t wear jeans!

A KICK ASSDERBY ATTITUDE!

A small amount of gear inc skates will be available to borrow from us for the first 4 weeks, if you do need to borrow anything please ask on here and we will see what we can do.
Sessions are £5 this includes the £1.50 entry fee that the kitto centre charges all non-members.

Even though the doors are open to everyone to come and have a go, a basic level of skating will be required to start the programme so please get yourself out as much as possible, the Argyll car park and the Hoe are 2 great places to practice. We’re not asking for much but we need to know you are committed to this as much as we are.

SKATE YOUR SKILLS SUNDAYS!

One of our girls organise a fortnightly Sunday skate at the YMCA in Torpoint, Antony Road Torpoint, Cornwall PL11 2NH for us, which you are welcome to attend to improve your skills and meet some of the girls, before freshmeat begins. The dates for Jan will be posted as soon and we have them. Sessions are £3.
